Part-1 Vedic mathematics

Multiplication

Multiplication is supposed to be the toughest of all four mathematical operations ,  students feel threatened by multiplication.

In this book, I have dealt with this topic in detail.

To make this topic easily graspable, I have divided it into several parts. Each part is full of examples, and steps are explained clearly wherever required. If this helps students, I will feel rewarded.

1.   First Formula

I have called this “First Formula” because in my opinion a person willing to learn magical methods of fast calculations should start form here , The Formula will be explained with various examples.

Multiplying two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers

Lets us start with an  example

  65

*65

……………

…………...

How would you multiply this in the conventional way? Let us solve it:

                                  65

                                *65

                              …………………..

                                   325

                                 390

                             …………………….

                                4225

                            ……………………..

What are the steps you took here?

·       First you multiplied 65 by 5 and wrote it below the line (325)

·       Then you multiplied 65 by 6 wrote it below the first row leaving one space from the right(390).

·       You added the numbers in the first row with the numbers in the second row by first  bringing down the digit on the extreme right and adding the other digits, thereafter, conventionally.

·       You got 4225 as the answer.

·

Now let us do it using the magical method :-

                                   65

                                *65

                             …………………….

                                4225

                            ……………………..

What did  we do here?

·       We multiplied 5 by 5 and put 25 as the right-hand side of the answer.

·       We added 1 to the top left digit 6 to make it 7.

·       We then multiplied it (7) by the bottom left digit 6 and got 42, which is the left-hand side of the answer .

·       We got the correct answer 4225.

Did  you get it?

Let us do some more by the method learned just now!

               75

           *75

………………………

           5625

……………………...

Let me explain the method again!!

·       We multiplied 5 by 5 and put 25 on the right-hand side.

·       We added 1 to the top left digit 7 to make it 8.

·       We then multiplied  8 by the bottom left digit 7 and kept 56 on the left-hand side.

·       We arrived at the right answer 5625.

Now the method should be crystal clear to you

In the same manner we can multiply the following:

15 by 15 , 25 by 25, 35 by 35, 45 by 45, 55 by 55, etc.

I understand , you are getting inquisitive now and are planning to ask  a  loaded question.

Your question is whether the applicability of the formula is limited to a  number ending with 5 only?

My answer is no, it is not like that.

Let us expand the formula

We can apply this formula to multiply a good number of two-digit and three –digit numbers.

Pre-condition

Note:- Left – hand digits should be the same and the total of right-hand digits should be 10.

Let us take an example:-

                                          66

                                        *64

                                  ………………….

                                          4224

                                   ………………….

In this example the left[hand digits are the same –i.e. 6, and the total of the right-hand digits is 10. So we can apply this formula here.
